Divergent (2014)

divergent
Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Kate Winslet, Tony Goldwyn, Mekhi Phifer, Jai Courtney

Plot: Based on the novel, Tris (Woodley) discovers at testing that she is “divergent” meaning that she doesn’t fit into a faction. After joining Dauntless, Tris soon realizes that Erudite is on the verge of beginning a war to overthrow Abnegation—Tris’ “home” faction where her parents reside—and using Dauntless as its army. She teams up with Four (James) to try and stop Erudite.

Rating: 3/10

Overall: This film was so “hyped” up to be something incredible. I’ll admit that I haven’t read the book, but after seeing the film I can only hope the book is far better. There were a few problems with this film—in my opinion—but the major one was the female lead. There has been so much controversy over why Tris isn’t as highly recognized or “appreciated” as the character of Katniss (from The Hunger Games—played by Jennifer Lawrence). While there are some things that I don’t care for in Katniss, Tris was poorly portrayed as a “strong female lead.” Her character irked me more than anything. She was the type of character where you sit during an entire film saying things like, “She’s crying AGAIN?” “JUST GO! RUN, YOU MORON!” This has to be one of the most frustrating films to sit through…and for what? I feel like that’s the problem with these kinds of films these days…they’re so predictable!
